A Room of Her Own: 4 Ideas for Upgrading Mom's Space

Help your mom design her happy place this Mother’s Day! In A Room of One’s Own, Virginia Woolf explains that for a woman to be a successful writer she needs a place where she can work without interruptions - but the same is true for women pursuing any passion! Women, especially mothers, need a space in their homes to carve out time for themselves - whether the goal is productivity or relaxation! Our favorite places in the house include the home gym, the craft room, the kitchen, and the garden.

1. The Home Gym

In today’s ever changing, high stress world, time is women’s most precious commodity and a good cardio burn is just the answer to resetting - one of the reasons why more and more women are choosing to work out at home. Done right, her home gym should be a place of beauty and relaxation. Pick a bright room with windows and a soothing view if you can. A large mirror is a great way to give the room a more open and bright feel, while also letting her be mindful of her posture and positioning. Sturdy baskets or racks for storing exercise equipment keep the room safe and organized, while potted plants and decorative motivational plaques like a simple “Namaste” can soften the visual impact of the equipment, giving the room a soothing ambiance.

2. The Craft Room

Finding the perfect balance between creativity and organization requires controlling the chaos. For practicality - think wide tables or wrap-around corner desks, low easy-to-reach shelves for different sized bins, and a swivel rolling chair for moving smoothly between supplies and workspace so she never has to interrupt her flow. Paint walls in a color that is soothing yet energizing with plenty of well-positioned lighting and add display cases or boards for showing off or brainstorming her creations. Then step back and let the muses take over!

3. The Kitchen

Spouses and children are usually good at knowing which trending kitchen appliance a mom wants, while designers take care of the big stuff - where the counters, shelves and all these appliances go. Yet, when it comes to turning a kitchen from the room where mom has to prepare dinner to a place where mom enjoys the culinary arts, the difference is in the details. To add charm to the heart of the home, consider newly cut flowers in a beautiful vase, potted herbs on the windowsill, a decorative bowl for fresh fruit, a stand for her favorite cookbook or ipad, a nicely crafted basket to fill with vegetables from her garden, scented candles for a perpetually aromatic kitchen, or an aesthetically pleasing spice rack for adding character to her cooking and decor.

4. The Garden

A little bit of magic is present in every garden, whether it’s a row of potted plants on a city balcony, raised garden beds on the patio, or a quarter acre of flower beds and citrus trees. Nurturing nature is therapeutic - if mom has the right tools. Stock a rolling cart with everything mom needs for any size garden - a cute basket for collecting her vegetables, decorative pots, picturesque rocks, a watering can or spray bottles, a full brim sun hat, gloves, soil, mulch, and seeds or cuttings of her favorite herbs and vegetables. Add a touch of extra enchantment with a bench or small table placed in the shade of a tree or umbrella so she can enjoy the fruits of her labor with a cool drink.

Whatever your mom’s personal pursuit, help her make space for it and let that space be beautiful! Once she has a room of her own, you never know, her biggest joy might just come from sharing her place - and her passion - with you!
